University of Mississippi, Earth Day Keynote: Laura Ogden
Hosted by the Environmental Studies Minor
Thursday, April 21st, 7:00-8:00 PM @ the Bondurant Auditorium
Each Green Week the Environmental Studies Minor invites a champion of environmentalism to give a keynote speech on environmental awareness and the importance of living sustainability. This year we are honored to host Dr. Laura Ogden as our Earth Day keynote speaker where she will present her lecture on:
“The Silence and Sound of Bird Song: Remembering Rachel Carson on Earth Day” – Presented by Dr. Laura Ogden
Dr. Ogden is a professor of anthropology at Dartmouth College who studies political ecology, environmental anthropology, and post-humanist philosophy; more specifically, she is interested in the politics of environmental change and conservation. This Green Week, she highlights the work of Rachel Carson, the acclaimed nature writer who understood that the image of a forest silenced of bird song would alert people to the dire consequences of species extinctions and environmental change.
In her lecture, “The Silence and Sound of Bird Song: Remembering Rachel Carson on Earth Day,” Dr. Ogden honors and builds upon Rachel Carson’s important contributions to environmental thought by exploring the sounds and silences of loss in the forests of the Fuegian Archipelago of southernmost Chile, where Ogden has done fieldwork on the environmental legacies of colonialism. Join us on April 21st from 7:00-8:00 PM at the Bondurant Auditorium!
